The Peggy Guggenheim Collection in Venice is the most visited museum in the lagoon city after the Doge's Palace and is one of the most important Italian museums on European and American art of the twentieth century.
It is based in Palazzo Venier dei Leoni, on the Grand Canal, a building with a splendid classical facade whose construction began in 1748 on a project by the architect Lorenzo Boschetti and remains unfinished to this day.
The palace was the private home of Peggy Guggenheim (1898-1979), ex wife of the famous surrealist artist Max Ernst and nephew of the magnate Solomon R. Guggenheim as well as a great lover and collector of art.
It has housed his prestigious personal collection since 1980, donated on his death to the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation which manages, among others, the famous Guggenheim museum in New York and that of Bilbao.
Schulhof Collection
In 2012 the museum was then enriched with the prestigious Hannelore and Rudolph Schulhof Collection, two wealthy American spouses who donated 83 works by important contemporary artists such as Andy Warhol, Cy Twombly, Sol LeWitt, Lucio Fontana, Anish Kapoor to the Guggenheim collection. , Alberto Burri, Alexander Calder, Claes Oldenburg, Jasper Johns and Mark Rothko.
The museum also houses the Nasher Sculpture Garden and numerous temporary exhibitions.
